Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano throws a no-hitter against the Houston Astros in their makeup game that was actually played in Milwaukee. The Cubs Ace became the first Cubs pitcher to toss a no-no in the last 36 years.
The interesting part of this no-hitter was the fact that Zambrano made his return to the mound after he missed starts due to a sore arm. And what makes it even more interesting was the fact that the Cubs wanted to limit Zambrano’s pitch count to around 90-95 but he was up to 99 before the start of the 9th inning.
If you ask me, that sore arm was fully recovered and it showed. Maybe Lou Pinella, the Cubs’ manager, should rest him more often if he wants similar results.
This was Zambrano’s first no-hitter in his career and he was pretty close to pitching a perfect game. Statistically, if he hadn’t given up that one walk, he would have finished with a perfect game that included 10 strikeouts.
Previously, Zambrano’s best games included two-hitters which he done twice. But the last one wasn’t until May 7th, 2004.
I’m sure the entire Cubs clubhouse and fans appreciated what Zambrano did but at one point in the game he wasn’t too happy. And that was his at-bat in the seventh where he struck out looking.
Hey, it’s a competitor and I think he took that strike out looking out on the Houston Astros.
