Olympic Gold medalist Michael Phelps was caught smoking marijuana. His picture was shown in a British newspaper, “News of the World”, smoking from a bong. Phelps publicly acknowledged that it was him in the photo. The photo was taken at the University of South Carolina in Columbia while he was visiting a girlfriend. They were at a party and somehow the photo got out. Students described Phelps as “loud and obnoxious” while at the party. One person said he was “out of control from the moment he got there”.

When releasing a statement on his behavior here is what Phelps said:

“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

This could definitely hurt the athlete’s rep but it’s not the first time he’s gotten himself into trouble where it got out to the public. Back in 2004, a few months after winning six gold and two bronze medals in Athens, Phelps was arrested for driving drunk at age 19. The swimmer pleaded guilty and apologized for the mistake.

Phelps was just in Tampa Bay for the Super Bowl to make promotional appearances. However he changed his plans and took an early leave before the game even started.

Debbie Phelps, mother of the young Olympian, cried at the news. Her reaction is probably what struck him the most. “That hurt worse, maybe, than anything,” Phelps wrote. “I had never seen my mother that upset.” Not only his mom, but his teammates were a little disappointed in him too, although they still stand by him. Olympic teammate Dara Torres said Phelps has become such a prominent figure that everything he does is news. This is so true. I’m sure it’s not easy always being in the limelight, but it’s always best to make good decisions when you know you’re so often in the eye of the public.
