Super Bowl is all about the commercials! Many would agree with this statement, but I’m sure some would beg to differ. I’ll be watching the Super Bowl mainly for the advertisements. I could care less about the

Super Bowl XLIII - Arizona Cardinals vs Pittsburgh Steelers - ad spots will run big bucks
One thing that all Super Bowl advertisers have in common this year, as I’m certain they do every year, is pressure. What makes this year’s pressure unique though is the amount of recent layoffs and our somewhat crumbling economy. Marketers had to make the decision whether or not to spend $3 million — $100,000 a second — to air a 30-second Super Bowl ad. Super Bowl XLIII is being aired right after a week when 17,000 layoffs were reported for the month of January alone. Of course unemployment was up in every state in December. According to USA Today, about 30 plus brands bought 33.5 minutes of ad time in the NBC game broadcast. This included veterans like Pepsi, Coke and of course Budweiser. Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, Denny’s and Pedigree pet food were among the first-timers. NBC even still had two slots left on Thursday.
Some of America’s biggest brands are experimenting with viral ads, user generated ads, online remixes and web-only versions too. This year, big brands like Miller, Doritos, PepsiCo and Hyundai Motors are running ads with a major online component.

Some of the best commercials are aired during the Super Bowl
Advertisers really had to think about what they air this year and do a little extra research. A few will still go for the comic commercials looking to make Americans chuckle. Advertising research guru Don Bruzzone says “The biggest danger every Super Bowl advertiser faces is being ignored.”
I read in an article on USA Today that for the last 12 years “there has been a direct relationship between people’s confidence in the economy and the attention they pay to Super Bowl ads” so you can imagine how high the pressure is this year. It’s risky business paying such big bucks on a Super Bowl ad this year, but many companies like A-B, which will be represented by its familiar Clydesdale horses in a record three of its ads, return nonetheless expecting ROI. So while many are watching the Cardinals and Steelers battle it out in Tampa Bay, myself and many many others will be focusing in on the hottest advertisements and famous brand names. Join NBC tonight to watch what will be some of the year’s best TV commercials during Super Bowl XLIII!
