In the most recent Sprint layoffs, which is actually starting to look like a continuation thing, they get rid of 8,000 employees. Most of the employees getting laid off are in the Kansas City area which represents about 15 percent of Sprint’s 56,000 total U.S. employees.
Now a lot of big name companies are feeling the effects of the economy issue and everyday I’m reading a new article about more and more people getting laid off. This pretty much sucks especially since the unemployment rate has been it’s worst since the mid 80s and it doesn’t look like it’s getting better anytime soon.
Sprint is currently ranked third in wireless companies and these drastic cuts should save them about a little over $1 billion this year. These huge cuts should be just about completed by March 31st 2009.
In addition to the huge amount of layoffs, Sprint is planning on suspending 401k match for this year, freeze any salary increase this year as well as suspend its tuition reimbursement program.
I’ll be the first to say that these layoffs or any layoffs are never a good thing. I feel bad for those people and we can only hope that these get better i nthe future.
But as of right now, it doesn’t look like it’s heading in that direction.
