See Pictures of the New Dora the Explorer Doll – Dora The Explorer had moms all across the Internet concerned about the new tween doll. Their response has been overwhelmingly negative. They think that it is a sexed-up version of the children’s icon and a poor example for kids.
The old endearing tomboy Dora with her T-shirt and shorts and bowl-cut hairdo that fans grew to love was changed to a “new” Dora with long flowing hair, shapely legs and wearing a scanty skirt.
Toy maker, Mattel, working with Nickelodeon, explains that the new Dora is an interactive doll aimed at 5 to 8 year-olds and will not replace the old “Dora the Explorer” cartoon. The President of Nickelodeon, Gina Sirard says, “The Dora that we all know and love is not going away.” However, some moms are confused by the silhouette that was released of the new Dora. She looked more like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears than a young girl. The actual doll does not wear a short dress, but a tunic and leggings. And even though she looks older with longer jewelry and longer hair, she doesn’t have makeup and is pretty much like an average 10-year-old girl.
Nickelodeon and Mattel said that during their research, they found parents who wanted to keep Dora in their children’s lives and have their daughters move on to a doll that was appropriate for their age. So they created the new Dora for the moms who said “help us.”
Jean Pierre Dube, Professor of Marketing at the University of Chicago’s graduate School of Business says that people value what the original Dora represents and even though it may appear that they are overacting to the new one, the important information is: “Don’t mess with this brand unless you’re very careful.”
