Penelope Cruz was honored for her role in a Woody Allen movie. She received the Oscar for best supporting actress in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Sean Penn, who played the 1970s gay activist Harvey Milk, in Milk won the Oscar for Best Actor. Penn says he did not expect to receive the awards and also acknowledged his fellow nominee whose career sorta faded back in the 90s. Best Actress winner Kate Winslet confessed to the audience that she used to pretend she was winning an Oscar at the age of 8 in the bathroom mirror. Winslet played a troubled woman with a Nazi past in The Reader. She no long has to pretend! The actress took a real Oscar home that night.

The year’s top-grossing movie, The Dark Knight, passed the $1-billion mark on Friday, making it No. 4 in top all-time earners. Dark Knight got eight nominations but mostly in technical categories. The late Heath Ledger was nominated for best supporting actor. Once Ledger’s name was announced for the award and his family went up to accept it on his behalf. Ledger’s father gave an emotional acceptance speech leaving not a dry eye filled the room.. well probably a few actually, but many were touched.
As Slumdog Millionaire approaches $100 million in box office revenue, the melodrama won eight awards out of the ten nominations. This is the most coveted Oscar of the evening and not to mention the last award given.

Best Movie Slumdog Millionaire, nominated for 10 awards
“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” was the year’s most nominated film, appearing in 13 separate categories.
Besides the buzz around the actual awards, fans pay close attention to the red carpet as the celebrities make their appearance in some of the top world renowned designers out.
Taraji P. Henson, Amy Adams and Marisa Tomei are three nominees who stood out this year on the red carpet.
