Wide Receiver Chad Johnson whose Ocho Cinco name change as of late will actually cost him a lot of money before he gets a chance to wear his jersey on the field.
For those who don’t know, Bengals wide receiver had his last name legally changed from “Johnson” to “Ocho Cinco” all because he wanted his nickname displayed on the back of his jersey. Of course, the NFL wouldn’t allow him to display the nickname so that’s when he took the initiative to change his name legally.
Well, it’s going to cost him a lot more than just signing papers and going to court!
Before he’s allowed to wear a jersey with “Ocho Cinco”, he must first buy every “C.Johnson” jersey for sale nationwide. And there are thousands of those replica jerseys available with a production cost of about $48 each. And if you take a shot, that could mean hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions that Mr. Ocho Cinco has to pay.
According to NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy, “When a player requests a name change or a number change, the player is responsible for that unsold inventory.”
Well, that definitely sucks especially the fact that players also get charged when they switch their numbers too close to the beginning of the season (after the tons of jerseys are made).
Well, lessoned learned! Now, time for me to get in line to get that Ocho Cinco jersey… where is it already?!
