Extremely talented Frankie Lymon was the first African American singing sensation in the nineteen fifties. He formed his band at the tender age of thirteen and called it “Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers”. He was the lead singer with this first black “Teenage” band. His first biggest and instant hit was “Why do fools fall in love”. This hit set the path for the Teenage band.
The teenage band was styled in a manner as not to upset the middle class American parents. The clean, youthful image and energetic performance attracted millions of music lovers to the Teenage band. The group had a fantastic choreographer with them Cholly Atkins. The group was seen on TV shows and was touring with “The biggest rock and roll show of 1956”. The success of Frankie Lymon and the band encouraged hundreds of African American youngsters to dream big and make a career out of music.
The group remained together for about eighteen months only and experienced some amazing success in this short time. Frankie Lymon set out to try a solo career but this never worked.
The songs of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers are fondly remembered and sung even today.
