Dustin Johnson has been declared the winner of the 2009 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament. Inclement weather caused major problems to continue play. Rain and wind toppling a 40 foot tree forced Sunday’s round to be canceled. Flooded fairways and greens and the forecast for continued rain forced officials to inevitably cancel the final round and declare Johnson the winner.
While preparing himself to play for the day on Monday, Johnson got word of his victory on the way to breakfast Monday morning. Another player phoned him to congratulate him on his victory.
Dustin Johnson is the youngest player to win at the Pebble Beach golf tournament since Tiger Woods did it 2000. Johnson is 24 years old. With his victory, he increased his ranking to No. 45 in the world and qualified for the Accenture Play Championship scheduled for next week. The victory also qualified him for the first two majors of the year, including Johnson’s first trip the Masters golf tournament at Augusta National.
Johnson tough play during at Pebble Beach saw him finishing at 15-under par and becoming the first ever 54-hole winner on the PGA Tour where the tournament ended on a Saturday. The previous 54-hole winner was Phil Mickelson in the BellSouth Classic in 2005, however, that tournament ended on a Monday.
