Worms in the brain? Doesn’t it sound scary? But the nightmare came true for Rosemary Alvarez, of Arizona and a mother of four children. The middle-aged lady consulted a physician who suggested her to go for a surgery suspecting she had brain tumor. But the surgery results appalled the doctors. They found not a tumor, but a worm ensconced in Rosemary’s brain. However, this is not an unrecognized medical condition though it is rare to find, because many people are not diagnosed with it until they face any severe physical discomfort and difficulty. It is called Neurocysticercosis (not to be confused with or misspelled as Neurocystisarcosis). The worm grows in the brain and breeds there. The larvae gets deposited in various parts of the central nervous system like cerebral parenchyma, the spinal cord and meninges and even can accumulate in the eyes, muscles and skin tissues. They eggs of these parasites remain everywhere, especially in soil, in uncooked pork and in toilets. It is imperative to follow basic hygiene like washing hands before eating, cleaning the toilets regularly and not walking barefoot, if one wants avoid worms growing in his or her brain.
People need to develop more awareness on hygiene. Especially, school children should be properly taught its basics.
