Abraham Lincoln was born 200 years ago today! On February 12th Licoln was born on the frontier in an isolated log cabin. Now 200 years later Americans still celebrate the man who changed the course of American history and our culture by drafting the Emancipation Proclamation.

Abe always loved books and learning new things even thought he didn’t always have access to formal education growing up. He left his family as a young man to become a lawyer and political leader. Many times Lincoln was underestimated. Once he assumed presidency in 1860, he introduced measures that resulted in the abolition of slavery. He was the first Republican president and the 16th president of the United States.
Lincoln started his political career in 1832 at the age of 23. He served as a member of the Whig Party with an unsuccessful campaign for the Illionois General Assembly. Ten years later he married Mary Todd and they had four sons.
President Lincoln successfully led our country through the American Civil War, which was its greatest internal crisis, while preserving the Union.
According to CBS News, President Obama will also be celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday today at an event at the U.S. Capitol before flying out to Illinois. There he will visit a Caterpillar plant in Peoria to talk about the stimulus followed by a birthday commemoration dinner honoring Lincoln in Springfield.

In an effort to celebrate Lincoln’s birth the Smithsonian Institute has created an exhibit that explores his life and legacy. The exhibit, titled Lincoln: An Extraordinary Life, will be showcased through 2011 at the Smithsonian Museum of American History located in Washington, D.C.
