The Result of My First Month Selling Direct Advertising

Ok this is July 10′th, and many of readers were asking about why the June advertisings are still here live on the site? Did you forget to put your July advertising Jack? No guys, I am actually letting them still alive on purpose.
June 2008 was the first month I started to sell a Direct Advertising here on JackBook.Com. At first I had never thought that it would be a great success. Yes, I said success. I am not talking about how much I made it here, I am talking about how many lessons I have learned, and how the result was far beyond the target I expected.
There were 11 Advertisers who bought the ads here with a total value of $670. As it was my first month to sell direct ads, it’s not so bad isn’t it? I was targeting about $200 sales with my first month, but the result gave me a little surprise.

So what’s the lesson?
- Check your spam box more often.
From 11 advertisers who advertised here on June 2008, 4 of them were found on my spam box. And 1 of those advertisers is Market Leverage. If only I didn’t check my spam box that time, I would have lost $510 from my hand
note: I use Gmail to manage my mails, and Gmail Anti Spams is so powerful. Even too powerful some time, many innocents mails are marked as spams daily. Check your spam box more often.
- Let your Advertisers set the price.
Many people got confuse about how much should they price their direct ads. I would say just let those Advertisers set the price.
Of course we need to set a standard, or minimum price might be the right word. For this site, I set $10 for 125×125 and Text link Ads under post for a month. I have received so many request to advertise here. I have even rejected about 4 – 5 offers because I have no empty slots anymore. So this is the time to increase the price I guess.
I will try to jump to $50 / month for 125×125 banner ads on the sidebar. and $30 / month for Text link ads under post content. Let’s see how it goes
Every people love bonuses. That’s why I give my advertisers bonuses with hope they will continue to renew their ads here.
- Limit your ads.
As I said before, I have rejected few offers to advertise here. Too many ads will break the beauty of my theme. Of course there should be more reasons but I think that is enough.
- Send Potential People Offer.
I haven’t done this yet. But I have received offers from few sites out there to advertise on their site with low price. I think that is a good way to find an advertiser.
But how to find a potential advertisers? I will write a more comprehensive article about how to find a potential advertiser here later.
- Use Ad Management Software.
If your blog can support it, it would be so much better to let a special Ad management software to help you manage your ads.
On June 2008, the first month I sell direct ads, I set the ads to run on a monthly base. So even you bought the ad on June 20′th, still on July 01 your ad will be ended. Now I change it to 30 days base. So if you buy ad now (July 10′th) your ad will be ended on August 09′th.
It would be a hard task if I set all the ads manually. So now it’s time to find the software. There are many free softwares we can use. I will write a post later about the options and what software I finally use.
